Gamers have been wondering when Sony might finally retire the PlayStation 4. After all, the console originally launched in 2013, and it's not getting any younger. Well, if a recent report is to be believed, we now have an idea of when Sony plans to put the PS4 out to pasture: 2025.
The product lifecycle of the PS4
This has been the subject of much speculation as of late. With the PS5 now widely available, some gamers have assumed that Sony will stop making first-party games for the PS4 at some point in the near future. After all, why would Sony continue to support a console that's nearly eight years old at this point
During a recent Sony investor presentation, Sony has finally revealed their plans for the PS4 with the release and success of their PS5. Stating that by 2025 they will officially phase out the PS4 and its games. Reviewing their current success in mobile and PC gaming, the company is planning to expand and develop within this area of gaming, alongside sales of the very popular and in-demand PS5.
The success of the PS4 console
Since its release in 2013, the PS4 has gone on to achieve great success within the gaming world.
It is currently the second best-selling console of all time, with over 100 million units sold worldwide. It's also worth noting that the PS4 has a pretty impressive software attach rate, with gamers purchasing an average of 4.3 games per console.
Plus, despite being within its later product life, the PS4 continues to remain strong on the market, much stronger than its predecessor, the PS3.
